IV Sedation for Children in West Bend, WI

At Bright Side Pediatric Dentistry in West Bend, WI, we understand that a visit to the dentist can be a source of anxiety for many children. We offer IV sedation as part of our comprehensive pediatric dental services to ensure your child receives dental care in a comfortable and stress-free environment. Our team is dedicated to providing high-quality care while making each visit as pleasant as possible for children and their parents.

What is IV Sedation?

IV sedation, also known as intravenous sedation, is a method of administering sedative medications directly into the bloodstream through a small needle inserted into a vein. This type of sedation is highly effective for managing pain and anxiety during dental procedures. Unlike oral sedation or nitrous oxide (laughing gas), IV sedation allows for a deeper level of sedation, making it an excellent option for children who may have significant dental anxiety or require extensive dental work at a young age.

Benefits of Sedation Dentistry for Kids

IV Sedation dentistry offers numerous benefits for children, including:

  • Reduced Anxiety and Stress: IV sedation helps to alleviate fear and anxiety, allowing children to feel calm and relaxed during their dental visit.
  • Improved Cooperation: With reduced anxiety, children are more likely to cooperate with the dentist, making procedures smoother and more efficient.
  • Multiple Treatments in One Visit: IV Sedation enables the dentist to perform multiple treatments simultaneously, reducing the number of appointments needed.
  • Enhanced Safety and Monitoring: Our team closely monitors your child’s vital signs throughout the procedure, ensuring their safety and comfort.

How Will IV Sedation Work for Children?

During your child’s initial consultation, Dr. Goodell will conduct a thorough dental examination and determine if IV sedation is recommended. Bright Side Pediatric Dentistry collaborates with Pediatric Dental Anesthesiology Associates (PDAA) to deliver high quality, safe, and effective in-office IV sedation with a Board Certified Pediatric Anesthesiologist. Prior to treatment, a thorough medical history is completed and detailed pre-operative and post-operative instructions are reviewed with caregivers.. On the day of the procedure, PDAA’s Board Certified Pediatric Anesthesiologist and professional team will administer the IV sedation in our office, allowing Dr. Goodell to complete high quality dental care quickly, effectively, and comfortably for your child. For additional details, please visit PDAA’s website.

Are There Any Risks of IV Sedation?

While IV sedation is generally safe, it is important to be aware of potential risks:

    • Common Side Effects: These may include drowsiness, nausea, or minor bruising at the IV site. Our team will guide managing these effects.
    • Not every child is a good candidate for in-office IV sedation. Bright Side Pediatric Dentistry and Pediatric Dental Anesthesiology Associates complete a detailed medical history and physical exam to ensure the patient is healthy enough to tolerate sedation without unforeseen risks.
    • Rare Complications: Serious complications are rare but can include allergic reactions or respiratory issues. Dr. Goodell elects to have a board-certified pediatric anesthesiologist administer the IV sedation while she is treating your child. Having both doctors looking after your child provides the optimal environment  of safety and comfort and delivery of the highest-quality dental care.
    • Safety Protocols: At Bright Side Pediatric Dentistry, we follow strict safety protocols and continuously monitor your child’s vital signs to ensure their safety during sedation.
